LEADERSHIP GOLD

When the name John Maxwell sounds, the thought of great leadership comes to mind. Yes John Maxwell is internationally recognized as a great leader and he has written this book from his repertoire of leadership experiences cutting across different environments; ministry, professional, governance, e.t.c in short he has vast experience in leading people which have in turn built great nations, great ministries, organizations across board, leaders commonly lead looking into the future but John wrote this book at age 60 having led for over 35 years, you can say he has enough experience in leadership. So there is no doubt about the rich and defining content, this book offers if you take your time to read it.

Now let’s review, comprehensively (smiles), “Leadership Gold” by John C.Maxwell has 26 chapters in total with a very rich and insightful foreword titled ‘Searching for Gold’. Just to let you know again, this book is rich in value and would do you so much good and benefit to read this review to the end, get the book, read and share this review and the book with someone else. (John Maxwell is sharing with you, why won’t you share with others?)

The book started with the author sharing some nuggets, he explained that much of the ‘Gold’ he shared in the book were his mistakes from a lifetime of leading and as remarked by Poet Archibald MacLeish “There’s only one thing more painful than learning from experience, and that is is not learning from experience” so in short this book is a repertoire of experiences from a lifetime of leading, now note, that, reading a book is never enough to make a difference in your life, your response to the information you got from the experience is what is able to help you. William Shakespeare said “committing a great truth is admirable; committing it to life is wisdom”

“Wanting to win is not enough, you have to go through the process to improve ” – John C. Maxwell

As it has been often said of leaderships, leadership is influence, according to the author, a lonely leader is not doing something right, great and very successful leaders are more relational than positional, they understand that it is better and exciting to see a group of people working together for a common vision, effective leaders don’t manipulate, they carry their people along for every step, they also understand that the people they intend to lead do not care about how much they know until they they see how much you care for them.

Anything worth doing is worth doing with others, dream big! – John C. Maxwell

There is a topic in the book that’s really insightful and would do good to every leader or an upcoming one, “THE TOUGHEST PERSON TO LEAD IS YOURSELF” Some peak points for me from that chapter is We don’t see ourselves as we see others, many a times and I am sure you would agree with the author that we don’t see ourselves realistically, we are quick to size up everyone according to their nature and not ourselves, in one of the books written by the author “Winning with people”, he said the first perons to examine is ourselves because not doing this well will
blind us to where our personal difficulties lie and not seeing them would hinder you from leading yourself effectively, a lot of times, human nature makes us judge others by their actions and judge ourselves by our intentions even if we did something wrong so far we think that our motives are good. There are very practical guides to leading yourself effectively in the second chapter from the author’s personal experience and it would surely help in the process of becoming a successful leader.

When we are foolish, we want to conquer the world, when we are wise, we want to conquer ourselves

Moving on, A leader is that person that has a vision and will naturally drive the people he/she is leading to bring it to reality but a good leader is the one whom according to Bill Easum, are objective enough to minimize illusions, they understand that self deception can cost them their vision” Reality check is what a lot of highly optimistic as against realistic leaders lack, a good leader continually cast a realistic eye on the situation because most times it is worse than you think or see, check the process to achieving the vision, it takes longer than you can think and the price(not only in terms of finances) it usually costs more than you think. A leader that lacks realism today may lack credibility with people because he doesn’t do due diligence to the reality checks thereby promises what he can not fulfill which in turn makes his client have lose trust in him.

Now in some few chapters forward, John Maxwell said you can’t lead people if you need people, now this looks like a contradicting statement to what we have above about leading and winning with people, I’d briefly expantiate on this then I hope you get the book via the link below to fully understand it. A leader desire and motivation to work should not be based on the praise of his people(followers) over the vision of the organization because the purpose of leadership according to John Maxwell is “to take people where they thought they could not go on their own, inspire and equip them to do what they thought they couldn’t do and accomplish what can only be done in a group working together”. A leader must always stay true to the vision even if it doesn’t make the people happy but great leaders are now able to convince the people to also staying true to the vision to productively ‘paddle’ the organization to success, leaders help everyone see things as they do even though it requires time and intentionality.

Now think of it, the last chapter is titled “PEOPLE WILL SUMMARIZE YOUR LIFE IN ONE SENTENCE, PICK IT NOW” A wise man said “Life is like a parachute, you have to get it right the first time” and that’s a whole lot of truth summarized in a very short statement.

Finally, take an overview of all that goes on in your daily schedule, if they were left to gather up, would they consist of values and impact that will leave the next generation a very important legacy that you will want to be remembered for? According to John Maxwell, your goal as a leader is not to be indispensable to your people, but to give them something that would be indispensable to them
It is said that a lot of people do not lead their lives, they just accept them, don’t be part of those kind of people there are three easy to understand and direct to apply approach which I’m sure you would find very useful and practical in the journey of being a great leader.

“Most people don’t get to choose how they are going to die but they can decide how they are going to live” – John Maxwell
