Fighting sexual temptation

This book; Fighting Sexual Temptation was written by Anthony J. Carter (You can read more about Anthony J. Carter here) and was originally published and released on 24th, May 2010.

This was a very interesting book to review for me because I was literally seeing myself in the lines of the book; the struggles and the victories, i hope it encourages and helps you too just as it did for me. let’s review……

Sexual temptation irrespective of how ‘holy’ or what ever name we can call it, everyone faces sexual temptation, married or single, old or young, everyone at one point in time gets sexually tempted.
Sexual sin comes as a result of sexual temptation, which could come in form of thoughts  inspired by some thing we saw or heard.

Sexual temptation is real, it is very real, even in the lives of Spirit filled Christians, sexual temptation is flying all around and the truth as Dr Luther said, he said “I can’t stop beds from flying over my head but I can make sure they don’t build a nest on my head” and it relates with us because we can’t stop people from getting indecently dressed(male and female), we can’t stop people from ‘displaying’ tempting contents or parts of their bodies, and ultimately we can’t stop the end time signs from manifesting but we can stop them from taking root in our hearts.

You know quite often, when we study the bible, we usually don’t have issues with the bible verse but we begin to have the issue an issue when the real meaning is pointed out to us and that meaning and most times, it negates what we accept as ‘good’.

(This to a large extent is why churches today have different doctrines because some denominations tend to interpret the Word according to cultural mindsets or what looks ‘good’ and acceptable according to pre existing belief systems while some also tune it to make themselves seem knowledgeable).

We always want the meaning of scriptural principles to be left for us to interpret when the bible(the will from God our Father to every man) says in 1Cor.2:14 that “the natural man cannot receive the things of the Spirit of God:for they are foolishness unto him:neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned”.

Jesus did not give his disciples this luxury, so also will HE not give we HIS present day followers the luxury of misinterpreting scriptures
And thus, Jesus says to his listeners, “I know you have heard the commandment  that you shall not commit adultery but do you understand that even to look upon a woman with lustful intentions in your heart violates the law of God?”

Jesus was saying here that, “I know you are well versed in the scriptures, you know the first and most important commandment, in fact you have read the different concordances and versions but are you aware of what it really means or you have given it the meaning suitable to your self made beliefs?”
Being a regenerated child of God goes beyond just knowing and quoting bible stories most time out of context, the Word rightly divided is supposed to be our driving force! It is supposed to be the LIGHT and the final authority on every thing not a piece of literature we redefine to suit us.

There is an error, i have observed we make, which is quoting scriptures ignorantly, twisting the meaning of a particular verse of scripture to support our stance in an argument, from reading this book i have learnt that before quoting a verse of scripture, i must listen to the Holy Spirit for it’s real meaning and not give it a meaning that supports my current situation.

On Sundays,  we dance and sing but what is the point dancing and getting excited in church but the heart is far from God, that is, the heart is not worshiping and praising God?
The heart is where it all happens, I read sometime ago that, “the physical sex between a husband and wife is the end product of what he has been playing on his mind”
So you see, the true evidence of being sons and daughters of God is that our heart is connected to HIM.

At the sermon on the mount Jesus said of those who pay their wives or husbands lip service adulterers!

Don’t be the one that goes to church just to be active or as a custom, go to connect connect with God and fellowship with the brethren.

Reviewing this book on fighting sexual temptation, I really appreciate the approach of the writer, he started and based the book on dealing with the issue of sexual temptation from it’s root; the heart and that’s why the review took like form.
Because that’s where all our contemplation, all our thoughts, ideas, imaginations, e.t.c. comes from but thank God that by God’s divine grace, we don’t do most of the wrong thoughts that comes to mind from what the mind has been exposed to.

“For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder,
adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, and slander”(Matt. 15:19). NLT

Now this is not about taking sides, it’s just the truth as God helps me and you will agree if you can look at it without been biased, i understand that we are in a time where the obviously degraded is accepted as the new cool but the truth must be said notwithstanding.

To my dear female readers, every man according to research, knows what sexual temptation is, the struggle is real some have gained control over it, some are in the process, but you shouldn’t be the fall ‘helper’ by dressing scantily or too fitted, as Christians, you need to come to understanding that your dressing is not just for you but also at times will inspire lust in the heart of the opposite sex.

Matt. 18:7: “Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes.” (KJV)

I believe God is helping us understand His Word and helping us set our paths straight according to how HE wants us to represent HIM on the earth.

Women, ultimately the sin lies in the heart of men.As men, we must learn to discipline our bodies and keep them under control (1 Cor. 9:27). Nevertheless, let’s make sure that you are helping your brothers on this quest for
victory and not hindering them. Temptations are sure to come, but the bible clearly says woe to those by whom the temptation comes!

Rounding up, when a problem is known, it is half solved, how can we now fight temptation according to the scriptures practically, in the continuation of the text Matthew chapter 5, Jesus said the way for us to overcome temptation is to pay the price of the abstinence from what gives us pleasure and satisfaction, in the process of overcoming lust, it could be calling it quits to a channel or news feed that contains sexual illicit content, it could be discussion with a set of people, it could an Instagram page that posts sexually stimulating content but also post things that can help you become a better person in your career, e.t.c. Be ready to pay those sacrifices, will you skip sexual contents when you bump into them to save your mind from sexually pervasive thoughts? will you?overcoming sexual temptation.jpg
Sexual temptations starts from our thoughts and they come in seed form, breakup stories, sexual abuse in different forms, the half naked picture, that moment your eye goes to see the ‘wrong’ part in an opposite sex’s body, they are all seeds and unconsciously will grow if they are not altered, the mind is the battlefield and we must take our stand as people on the journey to greatness to consciously and deliberately make sure we are in control of our thoughts which in turn directs how our lives turn out to be.

Take note of what your mind is exposed to! There is something called defective success that is succeeding at the wrong thing, some pages that feed our minds with these seeds most times tend to also have something that will appeal to us making us think we can overlook the sex part but no! The seeds are growing and you are indirectly watering it!
Finally, are you ready to be alone on the path of sexual purity? Imagine you are in a group of people and they start talking about their sexual escapades, what will you do?
Keep quiet, so they won’t see you as out of time or get out of the discussion to guard your heart?

Will you support an idea just to make you feel among even when you know it is not in  line with biblical standards?

Sexual temptation is real for both sexes, and we can be on our way out by deciding, *I WANT TO STOP, GOD PLEASE HELP ME* and start taking the decisions listed above.

Phil.4.8 – “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things”

Typing this, I was getting flashbacks and have but to just say thank God but just as Paul said  For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing – Romans 7:18-19

“O wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from this body of death?” (Rom. 7:24). ESV

Sexual temptation is real and is common in this generation and no one that has his /her head rightly placed is immune to sexual temptation.

Brethren I urge you this day by the mercies of God flee from all appearances of sexual temptation and as you flee, run to Calvary, where instead of the temporary and fleeting sexual satisfaction, you have eternal satisfaction enough to fill you with even when everyone else is sad. We don’t need to live as slaves and hence become part of the instruments of extramarital and premarital sex.

Therefore, let us live for Him who is able to save and satisfy us, Him who can keep us from stumbling and present us faultless before the presence of God in glory with joy (Jude 1:24)  ESV
